comScore latest social networking market study found that more than 30% of smartphone users accessed social networking sites via their mobile phones in January 2010 , up 36% compared to 22.5% one year back.
Twitter showed an exponential growth with a 347% increase over one year. Also, Smartphone users accessing Facebook via their mobile phones increased 112%
According to Comscore social networking remains one of the most popular and fastest-growing behaviors on both the PC-based Internet and the mobile Web. In their analysis they found that social media is a natural sweet spot for mobile since mobile devices are at the center of how people communicate with their circle of friends, whether by phone, text, email, or, increasingly, accessing social networking sites via a mobile browser.
But this is not something happening with smartphones only, during January 2010, 11.1% of all mobile phone users accessed social networking sites via mobile phones, an increase of 70% from 6.5% last year. Still, this growth is mainly driven by Smartphones or more advanced mobile phone owners; Only 6.8% of all basic phones or feature phone users accesed social networking sites on their mobile phones.
In terms of total numbers, in January 2010, 25.1 million mobile users accessed Facebook via their mobile browser, up 112% from last year. In the other hand, MySpace congregate less than half that of Facebook mobile visits in the same month with only 11.4 million users.
But probably Twitter is the social networking site experiencing the most shocking growth; in both mobile and PC-based channels the site attracted 4.7 million mobile users in January , an increase of 347% year to year.
