As Web 2.0 becomes more and more a mainstream media and a essential communication tool for everyone, new segments start entering this space creating disruption. For instance, during the past few months a massive amount of seniors have joined social networking sites like facebook, becoming the fastest growing segment according to Comscore report.

Now social media is becoming a common place for the so-called “digital moms” segment, which is showing a very intensive and unique usage pattern across social media.

Apple buys “cloud music” Lala 0

Lala is a very exciting music streaming service. The San Francisco based starlet has been offering “music in the cloud” for the last four years.  Essentially users pay a small amount (roughly ten cents USD) for adding favorite music to their playlist that can be streamed anytime, anywhere without downloading it.

The business model changes storage capacity (downloads) for bandwidth (streaming). Also, the service is absolutely legal due to several agreements with most music labels.

Pingdom released a new study showing the ratio between men and women on top 19 social networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, Twitter, Slashdot, Reddit, Digg, Delicious, StumbleUpon, FriendFeed, Last.fm, Friendster, LiveJournal, Hi5, Imeem, Ning, Xanga, Classmates.com and Bebo. 

The research reveals that women rules the social networking space with a higher proportion of users in most of the sites.

Social media is already mainstream media and Singapore is at the forefront. The most wired country in the world with more broadband connections than homes is leading the way on time spent on social networks. With 4.8 broadband connections in total and highly advanced digital pattern, Singaporeans spend in average 1.300 minutes on internet every month according to Comscore.

Is also fascinating to see that Social media is chaging consumer norms and value. For instance, 51% of all Singaporeans trust more in blogs than traditional media, and Blogger is the 6th most visited site in the country. On the 20 top most visited sites in Singapore, 80% are related to social media or user generated content.

Wikileaks reveals 500.000 text pagers from 9/11 0

The controversial site wikileaks has released 500.000 text pager intercepts covering a 24 hour period surrounding the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York and Washington.

The messages were broadcasted “live” to the global community — synchronized to the time of day they were sent. The first message was from 3AM September 11, 2001, five hours before the first attack, and the last, 24 hours later.

Facebook is getting old 0

Some few weeks back my mother, which is 70 years old, started her own Facebook account. As a new social media user it took her sometime before she really understood the concept of social networks, but after three weeks she started uploading pictures, tagging people, commenting on walls (sometimes without distinguishing between walls and direct messages) and increasing her network by adding all our extended family.

Maybe this is good reflection on how Social media sites are becoming a mainstream channel for communication. And in the case of Facebook, it looks like its attracting a bigger amount of old users meanwhile younger users are focusing more on microblogging.

By 2020 more than 50 billion devices will be connected using broadband connections and every one of us will be surrounded by an average of 10 devices.

M2M is an acronyms for machine-to-machine technology that supports wired or wireless communication between devices. Usually, M2M is more like a set of businesses specifically involved in automating an application between remote devices and an enablement platform. M2M services could be used for automatic pull/ push of data or automatic processing of data.

Wireless M2M encompass a wide range of wireless network technologies including cellular networks, satellite networks, RFID, Wi-FI and Wimax among others.

Currently most of the wireless M2M market is related to RFID applications where Access control, Animal ID, Automobile immobilization and Electronic toll collection encompass  56% of the market according to strategy analytics.

Nevertheless this technology is under a complete revamp mainly driven by the wide spread of mobile broadband. New opportunities will arise in industries like Automotive, Home appliances and utitlies, generating opportunities for ICT stakeholders.
